A Storm, a Secret, and a Sudden Blessing: The Week Trump Shifted the Spotlight

Former President Donald Trump briefly stepped away from campaign politics this week to share unexpected personal news: his family is growing once again.

While addressing members of the Detroit Economic Club, Trump paused mid-speech to acknowledge several audience members, including businessman Massad Boulos — father of Michael Boulos, who is married to Trump’s daughter Tiffany. As he introduced Boulos, Trump casually announced that Tiffany and Michael are expecting their first child.

“He’s the father of Tiffany’s husband, Michael, who’s a very exceptional young guy,” Trump told the crowd. “And she’s an exceptional young woman. And she’s going to have a baby. So that’s nice.”

The offhand announcement drew applause and added a celebratory note to what had been a policy-focused event. But this wasn’t the only moment this week where Trump drew attention beyond the campaign trail.

In Florida, hundreds of electric linemen preparing for Hurricane Milton received an unexpected gesture from the former president’s family. Eric Trump posted a video showing 275 workers from Florida Power & Light Company arriving at Trump National Doral Miami — where, he said, they would be staying free of charge while staging for the massive restoration effort expected once the storm cleared.

“Honored to have 275 incredible linemen from FPL at Trump Doral as they get ready to respond to the aftermath of Hurricane Milton!” Eric Trump wrote. “You are amazing, and the Trump family — and the entire state of Florida — appreciates you. Enjoy the rooms… be safe!”

The gesture came as Florida braced for catastrophic outages. Governor Ron DeSantis announced the mobilization of more than 50,000 linemen from across the country — the largest pre-storm staging effort in U.S. history, according to state officials. By mid-week, over 3.5 million Floridians were without power, and the storm had not yet fully passed through.

“As soon as that storm moves out, assessments and restoration will begin immediately,” DeSantis promised.

The linemen temporarily staying at Trump National Doral are being housed in one of Florida’s most well-known resorts — one that routinely receives national travel awards. According to the resort’s website, standard guest rooms typically begin at more than $250 per night, with luxury suites costing considerably more.

Supporters of the former president praised the move, calling it consistent with Trump’s tendency to spotlight and assist frontline workers during crises.

The hurricane response also reignited tensions between DeSantis and Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris accused the Florida governor of acting “selfishly” because he did not accept her phone call as the storm approached — a claim DeSantis rejected outright.

“All she’s trying to do is inject herself into a political storyline,” DeSantis said during a press briefing. “I don’t have time for political games. People’s lives are on the line.”

He added that despite Harris’s complaints, she does not play any direct role in emergency management.

“She’s not part of the chain of command,” DeSantis said. “I’m coordinating with President Biden, FEMA, and state and local partners. That’s how the system works.”

He also argued that Harris had never previously shown interest in Florida’s hurricane seasons, saying she was now attempting to manufacture a controversy to benefit her political messaging.

“Now she’s attacking me because I’m not catering to her whims?” he said. “My job is to protect Floridians, not to help her campaign.”

Between the family announcement in Detroit, the storm preparations in South Florida, and the renewed political crossfire, the former president and his allies found themselves at the center of several storylines this week — some deeply personal, others pointedly political.

For Trump, the Detroit event served as a reminder of the role he continues to play as a political figure and a patriarch. For DeSantis, the hurricane marked another test of leadership as he navigated both the crisis on the ground and the political storms generated in Washington.

And for the thousands of workers deployed across the state, the focus remained on restoring power as quickly and safely as possible — with an unexpected stay at a luxury resort providing one more twist in an already dramatic week.
