Couple with Down Syndrome Chooses Parenthood Despite Criticism
Many of us have experienced the pressure society places on individuals when it comes to decisions about family. There is often an unspoken expectation that one should have a good job, find a partner, get married, and eventually have children. For couples who choose not to have children, this decision is often questioned, and they are sometimes expected to justify their choice to others. Such personal questions, which many people feel entitled to ask, can make the recipients uncomfortable and intrusive.
This societal pressure is not only felt by those who decide not to have children, but also by those who make non-traditional decisions about parenthood. In particular, couples who may be perceived as “different” in some way often face judgment, especially when it comes to the question of whether they should become parents. A heartwarming and inspiring story from over two decades ago illustrates the courage it takes to go against societal expectations, demonstrating that love, determination, and support can overcome obstacles.
Patti White from California had a very unique experience when her daughter, Lisa, announced that she was pregnant. Lisa, who has Down syndrome, had lived independently for several years, working full-time at a local Goodwill store and maintaining her own apartment. Lisa, despite her challenges, was an independent, self-sufficient adult. However, as Lisa revealed that she was pregnant, the news shocked her mother.
Down syndrome, a genetic disorder that results in developmental delays and physical impairments, can affect people in different ways. However, many people with Down syndrome lead independent lives, hold jobs, and build relationships. For Lisa, a relationship with a man who also had Down syndrome had led to the unexpected pregnancy. Though the medical advice at the time suggested men with Down syndrome were typically sterile, fate had other plans.
When Patti received the phone call from Lisa revealing that she was going to be a grandmother, her emotions were a mixture of surprise and uncertainty. “My mind went in all directions,” Patti recalls. Lisa’s decision to keep the child was not met with universal support. Many people questioned her ability to be a good mother and criticized her for being irresponsible. However, Patti stood by her daughter, offering unwavering support.
Lisa’s pregnancy was a typical experience in many ways. She attended childbirth classes, hired a pregnancy coach, and dealt with all the usual symptoms such as morning sickness. Despite the challenges, she worked five days a week while pregnant, dealing with nausea and fatigue, but never giving up. The pregnancy was treated as high-risk, and her son, Nic, was born prematurely, four weeks before his due date. Like his parents, Nic was born with Down syndrome.
Unfortunately, shortly after Nic’s birth, his father passed away, leaving Lisa to raise him as a single mother. However, Patti and Lisa worked together to ensure that Nic was loved and well cared for, defying the odds and proving the doubters wrong. Nic grew up to be a strong and confident young man, excelling in college and developing deep respect for his mother and grandmother, who raised him with love and devotion.
Now 24 years old, Nic is a college graduate and reflects on the impact of his upbringing. He appreciates the sacrifices his mom and grandmother made for him and describes Lisa as the most important figure in his life, acknowledging her love and care throughout his childhood. “I have two moms. My mom Lisa is my greatest future in my life. She gave me life and love, and she is always wonderful and beautiful,” Nic shared in a heartfelt statement.
In 2016, Patti shared an update on Facebook that captured a special moment between Lisa and Nic. Patti proudly posted a picture of the mother and son, both smiling and laughing together, demonstrating the bond they shared. Patti wrote: “This is my daughter, Lisa, clowning with her son, Nic. They both have Down syndrome. This year is a landmark for all of us. She will turn 50, and he will turn 20. Me, I’m older than dirt. So proud of us.”
Patti’s post also reflected on the success of their journey, emphasizing how they had overcome numerous challenges. Patti expressed how proud she was of the love and connection that Lisa and Nic had built over the years. Despite the challenges they faced, the bond between mother and son remained strong and full of love. Patti’s message also spoke to the broader impact of their story, as it highlighted the value of individuals with Down syndrome and the importance of supporting them as they pursue their dreams.
This powerful story of Lisa, Nic, and Patti shows the world that people with Down syndrome are just as capable of living fulfilling lives, raising families, and creating meaningful relationships. Their journey demonstrates that love and perseverance can triumph over adversity, and that societal norms about parenthood are not always reflective of the reality that people can achieve despite perceived challenges.
Patti, Lisa, and Nic’s story is an inspiring reminder that everyone’s journey is unique, and that with support, anyone can defy the odds and make a meaningful impact. Through their lives, they’ve become an example of how love and commitment can transcend societal expectations, and hopefully inspire others to make decisions based on what’s best for them, not based on judgment from others.
