“From Laughter to Landing: When Trump Cut a Flight Short Over a Joke”
Ruby Wax Recalls Being Kicked Off Trump’s Jet After Laughing at His Presidential Dream
Long before Donald Trump became the 45th President of the United States, a surprising incident involving the former real estate mogul and British-American comedian Ruby Wax unfolded high above the ground—and it’s a story she still finds hilarious.
Now 70 years old, Ruby Wax has been a staple on British television for decades, known for her sharp wit, quick tongue, and a long list of memorable interviews. But one of her most unexpected encounters happened in the 1990s during a pre-interview meeting with none other than Donald Trump himself. According to Wax, the meeting took a dramatic turn when she burst into laughter after Trump told her he intended to run for president one day.
Wax recounted the story recently during an appearance on Good Morning Britain with hosts Kate Garraway and Charlotte Hawkins. During the conversation, she revealed that Trump had invited her and her crew onto his private plane for an interview. As was customary in her interview style, Wax preferred to sit down for a casual meal before filming to loosen things up and hear the off-the-record side of her guests.
That’s when Trump apparently made the bold declaration that left Wax stunned.
“He said, ‘I want to be the next president of the United States,’” Wax recalled. “And I just laughed—I thought he was joking. I thought, ‘Wow, this guy’s got a great sense of humor.’”
But Trump didn’t find her laughter amusing.
“He looked at me and said, ‘That’s it. I want her off the plane,’” Wax said. The interview, which hadn’t even begun, ended abruptly. According to her, the aircraft, already cruising at 33,000 feet, turned around and landed, effectively cutting the trip short. “So, we landed and were stuck in Arkansas with nowhere to go,” she added with a laugh.
Wax described Trump as “fierce and vicious” during the interaction, claiming that he struggled to understand her demeanor. “He said, ‘You’re angry with a smile.’ And he wasn’t wrong,” she said. “When a man treats you like you’re stupid, you kind of become stupid. He couldn’t figure me out.”
After being ejected from the plane, Wax and her crew eventually caught up with Trump again—this time in Nebraska, where he was judging a Miss Nebraska beauty pageant. The surreal nature of the whole ordeal has turned into one of Wax’s most memorable anecdotes.
Though Trump did eventually make good on his presidential ambitions decades later, the story is a reminder of how unlikely it once seemed. Back then, many viewed his political ambitions as far-fetched or simply part of his larger-than-life personality. Wax’s reaction, while comedic, reflected the broader skepticism of the time.
Meanwhile, Trump continues to remain a powerful and polarizing figure in American politics. Despite multiple controversies, criminal charges, and even surviving assassination attempts, his popularity among a significant portion of the electorate remains strong.
According to a recent poll conducted by J.L. Partners in collaboration with The Daily Mail, Trump’s approval rating has reached 53%, marking a four-point increase in just one week. This jump came after his administration implemented a wave of tariffs on April 2, a move that drew criticism from Democrats and the media but appears to have resonated with voters.
The poll showed a remarkable 13-point increase in support among voters aged 18 to 29 and a 17-point increase among Black voters. His approval rating also rose among registered Democrats and independents, signaling a broader shift in perception.
Business leaders, too, seem optimistic. According to recent survey data from RedBalloon and PublicSquare, more than two-thirds of small business owners expect the U.S. economy to grow over the next year. Many credit Trump’s efforts to reduce federal regulations and support American enterprise as key drivers of that optimism.
TaChelle Lawson, founder of FIG Strategy & Consulting, gave Trump a “solid B+” for his early performance. “He’s made it clear that his focus is on business and economic recovery,” she said. “Small business owners see that and respect it.”
Michael Seifert, CEO of PublicSquare, echoed that sentiment. “This administration is directly addressing the overregulation that’s held back growth,” he said. “Small businesses are finally feeling hopeful again.”
As Trump’s second-term campaign builds momentum, stories like Wax’s continue to resurface—part reminder, part reflection of how unpredictable his rise has been. From being laughed at aboard his private jet to leading polls and shaping economic policy, Trump’s journey has been anything but ordinary.
For Ruby Wax, the memory is still a good laugh. For others, it’s a fascinating glimpse into the early days of a man who would eventually change the political landscape of America.
