FBI and Secret Service Review Social Media Post by Former Director Comey Following Online Controversy

Federal agencies are currently reviewing a recent social media post by former FBI Director James Comey, which sparked public concern and prompted official scrutiny due to its perceived implications. The post, now deleted, featured an image that included a numerical arrangement some interpreted as a veiled threat against former President Donald Trump.

The image, posted to Comey’s X (formerly Twitter) account, showed a collection of seashells arranged to form the numbers “86 47.” In the caption, Comey simply wrote, “Cool shell formation on my beachwalk.” While the post appeared harmless to some, others online interpreted the combination of numbers as suggestive or coded language.

The number “86” is sometimes used in slang to mean “to eliminate” or “get rid of,” and when paired with “47”—a number that many Trump supporters associate with him potentially becoming the 47th president—some critics argued that the message could be construed as threatening.

FBI Director Kash Patel addressed the situation in a social media statement, explaining that federal authorities were aware of the post and had begun working in coordination with other relevant agencies.

“We are aware of the recent social media post by former FBI Director James Comey, directed at President Trump,” Patel wrote. “We are in communication with the Secret Service and Director [Kimberly] Cheatle. Primary jurisdiction is with the Secret Service on these matters, and we, the FBI, will provide all necessary support.”

Shortly after the controversy gained attention, Comey returned to social media to clarify the intent of his original post. In a follow-up message, he stated that he was unaware of the numerical symbolism and denied any harmful intentions.

“I didn’t realize some folks associate those numbers with violence,” he wrote. “It was just a pattern I saw during a beach walk. That’s all.”

Despite this explanation, the post has raised questions among lawmakers and public officials. In a televised interview, former President Trump responded to the post, suggesting that the symbolism was obvious and dismissing the notion that Comey did not understand its potential interpretation.

“He knew exactly what that meant,” Trump said. “Even a child could tell. And if a former FBI Director doesn’t know, then that’s deeply troubling in itself.”

The Secret Service, which is responsible for the safety of current and former U.S. presidents, also confirmed that the agency is reviewing the matter. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem acknowledged the ongoing investigation on her official social media account, stating that the agency was taking appropriate steps.

“DHS and Secret Service are investigating this matter and will respond accordingly,” she wrote.

Some public figures, including former intelligence officials and legal experts, have weighed in on the debate. While interpretations vary, many agree that in the digital age, public statements by individuals in positions of influence carry significant weight and must be considered carefully, especially when involving individuals with public followings or sensitive political histories.

Former government prosecutor and national security analyst Tulsi Gabbard shared her thoughts in an interview, emphasizing the importance of clarity and accountability in communication.

“Given Mr. Comey’s background as a law enforcement leader and former FBI Director, it’s difficult to believe he was unaware of how such a message might be perceived,” she said. “Even if unintentional, the implications of using language or imagery that could be misread should be taken seriously, especially in today’s polarized climate.”

The image drew additional attention due to similar slogans seen in previous online campaigns and protest materials. In some cases, the phrase “86 47” has been used as a political statement on social media, though its interpretation can vary widely depending on context.

Comey, who served as FBI Director from 2013 until his dismissal in 2017, has remained a polarizing figure in American public life. Since leaving office, he has continued to speak publicly on issues related to justice, democracy, and law enforcement, often drawing both praise and criticism from different segments of the population.
