White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt recently responded to a series of questions from reporters regarding Elon Musk’s involvement in government operations, confirming that the billionaire entrepreneur has been designated a “special government employee.” The designation sparked interest and speculation, particularly concerning whether Musk holds a security clearance and what role he plays in U.S. operations.

During a press briefing, CNN correspondent Kaitlan Collins asked Leavitt to clarify Musk’s status, specifically if he had received a background check or security clearance. Leavitt confirmed Musk’s official designation but was not able to provide immediate details on his clearance level. “I can confirm he’s a special government employee. I can also confirm that he has abided by all applicable federal laws,” she said. “As for his security clearance, I’m not sure, but I can check back with you.”

When asked whether Musk or anyone on his team had passed a background check, Leavitt reiterated that she would need to look into the details. Originally planned as a short stay, their time in orbit has been extended due to technical issues with the Starliner, including helium leaks and thruster malfunctions. NASA deemed the capsule unfit for a return journey, prompting contingency plans involving a SpaceX Dragon capsule.

While NASA had long included SpaceX in its return strategy for the mission, delays have pushed the timeline further. Elon Musk recently confirmed via his social platform, X, that SpaceX is ready and able to bring the astronauts home. “We will do so as soon as possible,” Musk said, emphasizing the urgency of the mission.

SpaceX has already positioned the return capsule in orbit, but the departure of the stranded astronauts is dependent on the arrival of a replacement crew. NASA typically coordinates overlapping missions to ensure smooth transitions aboard the ISS. Due to technical adjustments on the replacement capsule, its launch was temporarily postponed, contributing to the astronauts’ extended stay.

In addition to his aerospace responsibilities, Musk was appointed by former President Donald Trump to co-lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a proposed initiative aimed at streamlining federal operations. Entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy was originally slated to serve alongside Musk but stepped back to pursue a gubernatorial campaign.

While the department is not a formal government agency, the proposed effort reflects a broader movement to apply private-sector efficiency models to public administration. Musk’s potential contributions to this initiative are expected to draw from his experience managing large-scale tech and engineering projects.
