Mia Love, the trailblazing former U.S. Representative and the first Black Republican woman to serve in Congress, has passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 47 years old.

Love, who was diagnosed with glioblastoma in 2023, a type of aggressive brain cancer, died peacefully in her home on Sunday, March 23, surrounded by her family. Her passing was confirmed by her loved ones, who shared a heartfelt statement on her official Twitter account. The family expressed their deep gratitude for the impact Mia had on their lives and the lives of many others. “With grateful hearts filled to overflowing for the profound influence of Mia on our lives, we want you to know that she passed away peacefully today,” the statement read.

Mia Love’s political journey began in earnest in 2014, when she made history as the first Black Republican woman elected to the U.S. Congress, representing Utah’s 4th Congressional District. According to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, those diagnosed with glioblastoma have a prognosis of just one and a half to two years, and the five-year survival rate is a stark 10 percent.
