Grandmother’s Last Photo of Granddaughter Taken Minutes Before Tragic Death
A heartbroken woman has shared a photo that captures the final moments of her granddaughter’s life, just before the three-year-old tragically passed away.
Reports confirm that Scarlett Jensen died in a hit-and-run accident on October 7, 2022. At the time, Scarlett and her younger brother, Henry, were being cared for by their grandmother while their parents, Samantha Jensen and her husband, were attending a wedding out of town.
While walking along the family’s private driveway in Oldtown, Idaho, an unimaginable tragedy occurred. A Chevy Tahoe sped down the road, hitting Scarlett, her grandmother, and Henry.
Samantha Jensen recalled her mother’s frantic attempts to save the children, saying, “My mother was waving her hands, screaming for him to stop, and she tried to grab my children to move them out of the way, but he was going too fast.” Scarlett was killed almost immediately, and both Henry and her grandmother suffered serious injuries.
The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot but was later apprehended several miles away. He is currently serving a ten-year prison sentence for the hit-and-run. Henry was airlifted to a children’s hospital, where doctors found that he had a fractured spine, six broken ribs, a broken jaw, a broken collarbone, a liver laceration, and other injuries. “Henry spent a week in the PICU before he was stable enough to come home, and he had a full-body brace on for 10 weeks,” Samantha told PEOPLE.
Her mother, despite having several broken bones, was eventually released from the hospital.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the family found themselves drowning in grief. However, there was a small, bittersweet comfort when Samantha discovered a photo that her mother had taken of Scarlett just moments before the accident. “My mom lost her phone when they were hit, and it took us a while to find it,” Samantha said. “When we finally did, I was going through pictures and found that one. I looked at the timestamp and realized it was only five minutes before her declared time of death, so it must have been taken seconds before the person hit them.”
The photo was taken when Scarlett and Henry had been out with their grandmother to get ice cream. When they arrived home, Scarlett wanted to get out of the stroller and pick some flowers. That’s when Scarlett’s grandmother captured the final image of her, unaware that it would be the last one.
Samantha explained, “When they arrived home to our back driveway, Scarlett wanted to get out of the stroller to pick flowers. That’s when my mom took the last picture I have of her alive.”
The passing of her daughter has brought an overwhelming wave of grief, but Samantha and her family are working through it. “Some days, it feels like I am drowning, and some days I am able to tread water,” she shared. “My whole family is putting in a lot of work in therapy and trying to heal as much as possible. My faith in the Lord has saved my life and helped me tremendously in my healing journey.”
Initially, the devastated mother found it difficult to look at the photo of Scarlett taken in those final moments. However, two years after her passing, Samantha has found solace in the image. “I am so incredibly thankful to have that photo,” she said. “It captures the peaceful feeling of her last moments, the beauty she was surrounded by when she took her last breaths. I will forever picture her happy and carefree, picking flowers with her best friend and Meemaw.”
The heartbreaking story of Scarlett’s passing serves as a reminder of how fragile life is and how precious the moments we have with loved ones truly are. Rest in peace, Scarlett.
