Courtney Love Says Goodbye to the U.S., Calls the Situation “Frightening”

Courtney Love, the iconic singer known for her career in the spotlight, is making headlines once again, this time with a significant personal decision. The 60-year-old former Hole frontwoman has shared her plans to make her current residence in London a permanent one. After living in the British capital for five years, Love revealed that she will soon be eligible for British citizenship, marking a new chapter in her life.

During an event earlier this month at the Geographical Society in London, Love spoke candidly about her life in the city. She had been sitting with Todd Almond to discuss his new book Slow Train Coming: Bob Dylan’s Girl from the North Country and Broadway’s Rebirth when she shared her excitement about her upcoming citizenship. “I’m really glad I’m here. It’s so great to live here. I’m finally getting my British citizenship in six months. I get to be a citizen. I’m applying, man! Can’t get rid of me,” Love remarked.

Though she didn’t explicitly tie her move to the political climate in the United States, Love has been vocal in the past about her disdain for former President Donald Trump, even comparing his political style to “emperor-core.” She expressed concerns about the state of American politics during his administration, calling it “frightening now” and describing the scene at Mar-a-Lago as one of excessive luxury.

Love initially made the move to London in October 2019, and in a 2022 interview, she shared some of the reasons why she loves living in the city. “Laws. No guns. Four seasons. Discourse. You stan a middle-aged woman far better. Discretion,” she had said, reflecting on the things she finds appealing about life in the UK.

In a more recent interview in 2024, Love reiterated her affection for London. “I’m an Anglophile. I love London, it’s my favorite city and is the best place I’ve ever lived,” she shared. “I’m left alone, there are laws here that protect me when I’m being outspoken, I like the friends I’ve made here.” For Love, the city’s environment has provided a sense of safety and comfort that she feels has been harder to find back home in the U.S.

Courtney Love is not the only celebrity who has decided to make a new home outside the United States. Comedian Rosie O’Donnell recently shared her own relocation story, revealing that she had moved to Ireland with her 12-year-old child and was in the process of obtaining Irish citizenship. In a TikTok video, O’Donnell explained, “I was never someone who thought I would move to another country, but it’s what I decided would be best for myself and my 12-year-old child. And here we are.” She added, “You know, I’m happy. Clay is happy. I miss my other kids. I miss my friends. I miss many things about life there at home and I’m trying to find a home here in this beautiful country.”

O’Donnell also hinted at political reasons for her move, commenting on the current political climate in the United States. “It’s been heartbreaking to see what’s happening politically and hard for me personally as well. The personal is political, as we all know,” she explained.

Ellen DeGeneres, too, has made a move abroad. Last year, she and her wife, Portia de Rossi, relocated to the UK. A source revealed that DeGeneres had been house-hunting in England and eventually purchased a home in the country. The couple’s move is another example of how some U.S. celebrities are seeking a different lifestyle abroad, citing personal and political reasons for their decisions.

For Courtney Love, the move to London represents a fresh start, a step toward permanence in a city that has brought her comfort and a sense of belonging. As she approaches her citizenship, Love continues to thrive in a new chapter of her life, finding peace and happiness in the UK while reflecting on the changes and challenges of her past.
